With all the Micheal Jackson stuff in the news, the media overlooked this.

All Electric Airplane Sets Record
By reaching a top speed of 250 km/hr (155 mph), team SkySpark established a new record for a "100% electrically powered aircraft." A brushless 75 kw electric motor and lithium polymer batteries powered SkySpark's Pioneer Alpi 300, shown in the video. The team — a joint effort between DigiSky and Turin Polytechnic University, Italy — will now focus its attention on an engine powered by hydrogen fuel cells

That is awesome! Haven't seen this in the new anywhere.

Having been big into RC flying, we've seen the battery and motor technology make amazing progress over the last five years, but even this is impressive.

I wonder how they're going to address the safety issues of Li-Po batteries though.

This subject does not go away!

The hybrid and electric tech being developed for cars is pushing it's way into aviation.

"Electric motors are three to four times better than internal combustion engines at driving an airplane propeller. And the reliability of electric motors is "perhaps 10 times or even 20 times that of a piston engine," said Brien Seeley, president of the Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency (CAFE) Foundation, an independent flight test agency which hosts NASA's Centennial Challenges for Aeronautics."

"There are major breakthroughs coming with the limitations of battery energy density as well," Seeley told TechNewsDaily. "Nanotechnology may be able to increase their potential maybe 10- or 20-fold."

Electric Aircraft At NASA

The electric aircraft research is in work at NASA. Battery tech keeps improving. In 10 years we may see one on the market.

"A super-quiet, hover-capable aircraft design, NASA's experimental one-man Puffin could show just how much electric propulsion can transform our ideas of flight. It looks like nothing less than a flying suit or a jet pack with a cockpit."

Only Li-Po battery I have is for my Dynatron starter, a makita drill battery attachment.

I do have a military ammo box to put in the Rx Li-Po in for charging so it doesn't explode and catch fire on my workbench. This is for my next 90 when MA releases the Bobby Watt's 90 and when OS 91 HZ-R is proven.

This tech would work nicely on electric aircraft also.

Parts of a car’s bodywork could one day double up as its battery, according to the scientists behind a new €3.4 million project announced today.

Researchers from Imperial College London and their European partners, including Volvo Car Corporation, are developing a prototype material which can store and discharge electrical energy and which is also strong and lightweight enough to be used for car parts.

The researchers say that the composite material that they are developing, which is made of carbon fibres and a polymer resin, will store and discharge large amounts of energy much more quickly than conventional batteries. In addition, the material does not use chemical processes, making it quicker to recharge than conventional batteries. Furthermore, this recharging process causes little degradation in the composite material, because it does not involve a chemical reaction, whereas conventional batteries degrade over time.

On the 1st of March 2009, a pair of electric aircraft had simultaneous maiden flights at Sywell Aerodrome near Northampton. These are the first electric aircraft to fly in the UK under the recently introduced sub-115 kg regime, which allows single seat, lightweight aircraft to be developed and flown without the administrative burden of the airworthiness approvals process applied to larger aircraft. This class was introduced to encourage innovation in light aviation in the UK.

Solar Soars to New Heights: Video

The craft that ascended from a Swiss military airport last month at 30 mph was powered by 12,000 solar cells, rechargeable lithium batteries, and four electric motors. The successful 90 minute maiden test flight of the Solar Impulse (see video) brings solar aviation closer to reality. Circling the globe and night flights are next steps.

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. - (June 4, 2010) - As part of its commitment to advancing electric flight, GE Aviation Systems has agreed to sponsor the World Symposium on Electric Aircraft as well as the Aviation Learning Center, which will host a week full of activities devoted to the emerging era of electric-powered flight at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2010 being held July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport.

The day-long World Symposium on Electric Aircraft sponsored by GE Aviation Systems, scheduled for Friday, July 30, will feature several influential industry leaders discussing electric propulsion aircraft in an open forum, offering what they envision is the future for this rapidly growing flight segment that is attracting the attention of scientists, engineers, manufacturers, and investors.

"We're really excited about this electric aircraft partnership with EAA," said Chet Fuller, GE Aviation Systems president and scheduled speaker for the World Symposium on Electric Aircraft. "We believe the path to electric flight is through fundamental technologies, and the research and development GE is doing within those technologies include generation, distribution, energy storage and platform-level load management."

Among the confirmed participants for the symposium are Scaled Composites founder Burt Rutan, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, Electric Aircraft Corporation founder Randall Fishman, Yuneec founder Tian Yu, Sonex Aircraft founder John Monnett, Earthstar Aircraft founder Mark Beierle (EAA #47579), who displayed his eGull ultralight aircraft at AirVenture 2009, and commercial pilot and flight instructor Erik Lindbergh, grandson of aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh.

Daily themed forums will be held at the Aviation Learning Center presented by GE Aviation Systems on safety and airframes; motors, fuel cells, and propulsion; advanced batteries and controls; and regulations. The week will conclude with working sessions on Saturday, July 31.
Airplane concepts and active prototypes will be on display throughout the week capped off by with special flight demonstrations to showcase these aircraft.

It Will Not Fly

But it is still cool...

Orange County Choppers, a motorcycle upgrade shop made famous via American Chopper, a reality TV show on the Discovery Channel, builds outrageous custom motorcycles and choppers. The shop recently built an all-electric chopper for Siemens. This video describes the chopper, which has six batteries, does 100 mph, smokes the rear tire, and can be plugged into any household outlet to be recharged.

The researchers believe the composite material could be used to make hybrid vehicles considerably lighter. The research team, in conjunction with Volvo, is planning to develop the composite material so that it can be used to replace the metal flooring of a car's wheel well. This would reduce the number of batteries needed to power the hybrid's electric motor and could reduce vehicle weight by 15%. In addition, the material could potentially be used for the casings of devices such as mobile phones and computers, but the project is targeting large scale applications. "One area is cars," Prof Kucernak explained, "another is planes; both areas where combining mechanical and electrical performance will be better than having a separate battery."

Charge of the Battery Breakthroughs

Reliability, deliverability, and economic obstacles to battery technology commercialization for stationary and mobile applications are being surmounted. A new approach to high-power lithium-ion batteries, designed for hybrid vehicles or electricity grid stabilization, is profiled in a Technology Review video. The electrode is based on carbon nanotubes and lasts for thousands of cycles. Lithium-air batteries that can store three times more energy as conventional lithium-ion batteries are also being pursued. Bringing new battery systems to electric vehicle and renewable power system markets will require continuous cost reductions and increased storage capacities. Targets for new technologies remain plug-in hybrids, microelectronics, and power tools.

Two Weeks in the Air
The world record for the longest flight for an unmanned air system is now held by the solar-powered Zephyr. The 110 lbs drone flew continuously for 14 days over the Arizona desert last month. Night flight is powered by lithium-sulfur batteries charged by wing-mounted amorphous silicon solar arrays during the day.

Large Aircraft Could Use Hybrid Power

Electric aircraft have hit the news, with Cessna and Sikorsky to fly demonstrators soon, but scaling up the technology to produce a commercial aircraft with low or no emissions remains an enormous, if tantalizing, challenge.

As manufacturers of light aircraft and helicopters, Cessna and Sikorsky can tap into the rapidly developing electric vehicle market for motors, controllers and batteries. Powering aircraft many times larger than a Cessna 172 will require much higher power densities, but industry believes technology is heading in that direction.

In studies of 2030-timeframe airliners, completed this year to help NASA plan technology research, industry teams conclude that electric propulsion can meet aggressive goals for reducing fuel burn and emissions. Boeing says hybrid turbine-electric propulsion is “game-changing,” with possible fuel-burn reductions of 70-90%. General Electric and Cessna believe fuel cells have “excellent potential” to minimize environmental impact, but pose significant size and weight challenges.

For now, the technology is starting small—as small as the French Cri-Cri single-seat ultralight modified by EADS Innovation Works, its two piston engines replaced with four electric motors that are each driven by a lithium polymer battery. The motors produce a total of 22 kw. and the aircraft has 20-30-min. flight endurance. Developed in collaboration with Aero Composites Saintonge and the Electric Cri-Cri Association, the aerobatic aircraft began flight tests this month. EADS says the 16-ft.-wingspan testbed will help develop technology for use in helicopters and other aircraft.

Cessna is backing Bye Energy’s project to fly an electric-powered 172 Skyhawk by early next year. The proof-of-concept aircraft is being reengined with a 90-lb., 168-hp. vehicle motor mounted in the nacelle along with 200-300 lb. of batteries. Bye is looking at a hybrid version, with a small diesel engine to increase endurance, and at mounting solar cells on the wing to recharge the batteries and extend range. Bye is projecting dramatically reduced direct operating costs.

Sikorsky plans to fly an electric-powered S-300C light helicopter by year-end under Project Firefly. A 200-hp. electric vehicle motor replaces the 190-hp. piston engine, and lithium ion batteries are carried in panniers on either side of the cabin. Flight time will be just 15 min., but Sikorsky expects that to increase as battery technology improves. Propulsion efficiency is four times that of piston power, and the company foresees future all-electric helicopters with motors mounted in the main and tail rotor hubs.

EADS is working on a hybrid power system for light helicopters that combines dual generator-equipped diesel engines with dual battery packs to provide reduced fuel consumption and emissions with increased safety. The diesel engines operate in the cruise phase, driving electric motors on the main and tail rotors and recharging the batteries, which are used for takeoff and landing with the diesel engines at idle. The four sources of electric power provide redundancy.

Boeing’s 2030-timeframe airliner study for NASA included a turbine-electric propulsion system in which removable batteries power electric motors integrated into advanced turbofan engines. Compared with a conventional turbofan, the additional power from the electric motor allows a larger fan and higher bypass ratio for lower fuel consumption. The aircraft takes off on turbine power and climbs and cruises in hybrid mode, with the potential to use electric power to augment the turbines on takeoff to reduce runway length or airport noise.

Boeing found hybrid power enables the ratio of fuel and batteries to be varied according to the mission, with long ranges flown mainly on jet fuel and short ranges mainly on electric power, markedly reducing emissions. Propulsion system weight increases because of the batteries and is sensitive to battery technology, but the study found a hybrid requires significantly lower energy density than an all-electric aircraft.

GE/Cessna studied all-electric propulsion using proton-exchange membrane fuel cells running on liquid hydrogen, which are projected to have sufficient power density by the 2030 timeframe. Fuel burn is reduced 75%, but powerplant and fuel weight and volume increase substantially.

The team also studied hybrid propulsion using turbine engines and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) that produce electricity by oxidizing liquid hydrogen or jet fuel. This offers high efficiency and low emissions, but it is an immature technology with relatively low power density and capacity in systems small and light enough for use in aircraft. GE/Cessna, like Boeing, recommended NASA fund research into hybrid electric propulsion.

Video: E Chopper Takes to the Air
The e-vehicle revolution reaches for the sky. Firefly, an electric helicopter due for test flights before 2010 closes, will use lithium-ion battery packs to stay aloft for maybe 15 minutes. Clearly, not yet viable for commercial work, but hopefully suitable for verifying the potential of quiet, low-vibration electric propulsion in aerospace.
